If travelling by air, by far the most convenient airport is Manchester Airport.  From here, it is possible to take the train directly from the airport’s rail station to Windermere, changing at Oxenholme (Lake District).  The journey time is around 2 hours and there are trains every 2 hours through the day (more often at some peak times).  Alternatively, it is possible to take other trains from the airport, but it will be necessary to change at Manchester Piccadilly, Preston or Oxenholme (Lake District) and the journey time will be up to 3 hours.

If travelling by train from the north or south (or from airports other than Manchester), it is necessary to travel to Windermere by changing trains at Preston or Oxenholme (Lake District). For train times and fares, please check http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/. Some tickets are cheaper if bought in advance – to buy tickets online please visit www.virgintrains.co.uk or www.thetrainline.com. For the approx. 9 mile journey from Windermere to Grasmere, there are regular buses with a typical journey time of 35 minutes.  Alternatively, it is possible to travel by taxi although this will be more expensive.

If traveling by car there is ample parking at the hotel. Grasmere is just off the A591, the main road that passes north to south through the Lake District. It can be very busy, particularly in the summer holidays, but makes for a beautiful drive through stunning mountain scenery. That said, you may want to allow some extra time in case of hold ups.

From the north, leave the M6 at Penrith (J40) and follow the A66 to Keswick. The A591 turn-off for Grasmere is well signposted just before the town.

From the south, come off the M6 at junction 36 and take the A590 for Kendal. Just before Sizergh, the A590 veers off, so from here carry straight on as the road becomes the A591. Follow this past Kendal for a beautiful drive through Windermere, Ambleside and then on to Grasmere.

For satellite navigation, LA22 9QN will bring you though the heart of Grasmere. Grasmere car park and parking charges. If you’re not familiar with the local area, we’d recommend that you take a little time to plan your route in advance. The AA Route Planner will help you to do this.
